What Happens When Garage Door Springs Break?

Your garage door spring does the heavy lifting — literally. A standard 2-car garage door weighs 150–200 lbs, and the torsion spring is what makes it feel effortless to lift. When a spring snaps, the door either won’t move at all, or becomes dangerously heavy to operate manually.

Signs your spring is broken or failing:

  • Door won’t open even with the opener running
  • A loud bang from the garage (often the sound of a spring snapping)
  • Visible gap in the torsion spring above the door
  • Door feels extremely heavy when lifted manually
  • Door opens unevenly or one side higher than the other
